Westhorpe

The Sign
The main village sign relates to the Tudor period, with Tudor crown on top (unsure whether it is Henry VIII or Mary Tudor) and the Tudor Rose underneath. The sign is made of metal in a tracery framework. There are also two approach signs to the village as shown on the right.

The Name and Population
The population of the village was 208 at the 2011 census. The place was called Westor(p) / Westtorp / Westrup in the Domesday Book. The name means "West, secondary settlement", from Old English and Old Norse.

Other Points of Interest

The village is notable too for its manor house, Westhorpe Hall, which was the home of Mary Tudor, sister of Henry VIII, following her marriage to Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk. Mary, who preferred the title the Queen of France, bore Brandon four children, but died at Westhorpe Hall on 25th June 1533 aged just 37.

The church is dedicated to St Margaret.
